Time moves on here in the boat yard. I have kept busy with some minor projects and watching the workers on their construction of the new hard bimini top. Kathy busy with her games via phone and tablet. The workers need no supervision, just reminders of little things, such as how we plan on installing the shades, what we want the grab rail handles to look like etc. We are pleased with how the top looks so far. This morning they cut the hole for the window, now of course there will be more wood and fiberglass work for backing to affix the window. Work is also moving along on the supports.

The weather here of late has just continued to be hot and dry, no rain for the last week or so. Thankfully the the last two typhoons and the newly formed tropical storm are staying well north of our location.

This now goes out with sailmail and then I'll hope to once again update the photos thru blogger.

Here we go two new posts in one day. Hey you need a break from sanding and it's raining lightly.

We had two main projects in mind to complete here in the boat yard. The first was the cabinet in our aft cabin for increased storage. That has been finished and the vacant interior now filled with Kathy's sewing supplies. It turned out the way we had hoped and we're quite pleased with it's look. The second project was to replace our old and very worn canvas bimini top with a hard fiberglass one. We then will eliminate the existing dodger as the bimini will be equipped with canvas and clear vinyl window material on all four sides that will roll up or down depending on the weather. In addition there will be shades similar to what we now have.

This has finally been started last Monday. The construction will be a honeycomb material covered in fiberglass. In addition there need to be some wood stringers as backing for screws, channels for wiring of interior lights, along with the window to view the sail, grab rail handles on top to serve as hand holds and double as rain catchers. As you can see this is not just a simple new top. For the first two days we had the top two carpenters working for us as we first discussed what we wanted and what the end result should look like. They used the existing bimini as a rough pattern to build a mold to lay down the honeycomb material. WE next had what appeared to be a giant curved rectangle of epoxied together panels. This morning I removed our fore and aft shades and the new top was put in place for it's first fitting. This was to draw the basic outline adding curves and shape to all the sides. We could finally get and idea of what it would look like. This afternoon the top is back up in the shop where two layers of heavy fiberglass roving have been added, tomorrow a single layer goes on the bottom. Meanwhile number two carpenter Lando is working on what will become the grab rail handles and Sandy, a fiberglass /sander is filling and fairing. Number one carpenter Alejandro is working on things for another boat and supervising. I make visits every 45 minutes or so to see how things are going and take photos. When questions arise we have Kathy come up to see and she is the one with the final say so.

Now with luck photos will also load and I hope to keep the updates coming as work progresses.

Once again I have been negligent in my updates. I blame the slow internet connection here and it's inability to load the photos I keep taking. I'll also add Kathy being sick for the past ten days so I was chief cook and bottle washer. I have just managed to update the Hong Kong blog with a few photos and I'll try the same with this edition.

Since returning from our short trip lots has been happening here. I fired our sander/varnisher, I could not take his tardy daily arrivals and though his work was very good it was nothing that I could not also do. Finally the forward V-Berth renovation has been completed and gives the interior a whole new look. Of course on finishing, the area has once again been turned into a storage area.

Next has been the re-doing of some of the paint and varnish work in the galley area. It seems with this old boat and some of the plywood veneer construction that there is constant delamination for me to repair. Some of the gluing I had done did not hold up so it was back to removing layers of wood applying epoxy, filling and now painting once again. Never ending FUN!
